Brittany Spaniels, also called Epagneul Bretons, are the smallest dogs from the group of pointing retrievers. They have originally been bred for shooting and have preserved their functions. Brittany’s are used for a variety of purposes. They do well in hunting, field trials, and perform well in a show ring. Besides, the breed tends to make a wonderful pet.

Brittany Spaniels are loyal, obedient, friendly, highly intelligent and active. The Brittany Spaniel breed tends to learn things quickly. Despite the fact that the Brittany Spaniel has inborn hunting instincts and is likely to obey most owner commands, obedience training should start early and continue throughout the life of the dog.

Brittany’s are people-oriented dog’s, the breed does well with children and other pets. Play is one of the favorite activities of the breed. The Brittany Spaniel needs minimal trimming of their hocks and feet. Grooming twice a week is sufficient. Regular nail care is necessary. Brittany Spaniels need regular exercise or they may become restless. They will benefit from training with a firm but soft hand.

It is possible that Brittany Spaniels may date back as far back as 150 A.D. More accurately they can be found in French and Dutch paintings and tapestries from the 17th century. The Brittany Spaniel is said to have come from France in the province of Brittany. They were first exhibited in the early 1900’s in France and made their way to the United States in 1931.
